Bun Bo Hue An Nam has been around as a staple of the Vietnam Town / East Side San José area for over a decade now, and I would easily say they have the best bun bo hue in San José! The broth is very rich and flavorful, the beef is soft and tender, and they are generous with the herbs and vegetables that come on the side. The atmosphere and service was pretty standard and clean. This is the place to go if you're craving a bowl of bun bo hue or are looking for authentic Vietnamese food. They are cash / debit only so plan ahead!
Honestly one of the best places to grab a hot and spicy bowl of bun bo hue in San Jose. If you actually like your bun bo hue spicy, but without the extra oil and fat, this place has the best broth with the perfect balance of lemongrass. Whenever I crave bun bo hue, this is the only place that truly satisfies that craving. My husband and I always ask for at least 2 extra chili saucers on the side per bowl because it's not spicy enough. We like our soup spicyyyyyy. The other bonus about this restaurant is that my kids like the pho here, which allows for mommy and daddy to eat in peace. I hate going to restaurants where the pho is just mediocre and the kids complain about the food not being good. We take pho very seriously in our house. Most of the time, we just have homemade pho since my kids tend to be picky about it. We absolutely love this place since the whole family leaves happy.
I forgot to update my review but I'm so glad that they finally stepped it up. I took my friends here because they wanted to try a bun bo hue restaurant. So, the broth was not as spicy I'd like but they added complimentary chili paste and fermented shrimp paste on the side. It was not too greasy which I like and they give a decent amount of meat. It's a pretty solid spot now. Service is just ok- not that I had any high expectations. The restaurant also looks the same as I remembered as a kid.
By far one of my favorite spots in the Bay Area for bun bo hue! I grew up eating here after shopping in grand century mall with my parents nearly every weekend and I can confirm that the quality hasn't changed one bit. They always give a ton of cabbage on the side with some juicy limes and mint. Although the soup is at a mild spice level as default, the order also comes with shrimp paste and a generous amount of chili oil sate if you want an even stronger kick. There's a good variety of meat/pork blood/tendon which keeps customers full. I absolutely love the portion of onion they give because it adds a hint of sweetness to each bite. Despite the obvious chili oil blobs at the surface of the soup, it doesn't leave a greasy feel in my mouth. Honestly so good and the only item I come here for. Only deducted one star because of the flies trying to get a taste of my food haha. Note: they only accept cash or debit card!! PARKING: This place is located within a small-medium sized plaza and the lot is usually filled at half capacity. Gets super busy on weekends during brunch hour!
After having Duc Huong bookmarked for ages, we finally decided to make the drive south to check it out. When I realized it was so close to Ah Nam, which is my husband's favorite spot, a change of plans was in order. He was thrilled when I told him, giving me two big thumbs up. We opted to have lunch there and saved the bahn mi for dinner. As usual, he ordered the large #2, and I got the small #1. He savored every bite, and seeing him so happy made my day.
Bun Bo Hue An Nam is a Little Saigon San Jose classic and I've been going here for many years. I'm not particularly a big BBH fan, but I love taking friends here because I know they will love it. The prices have gone up a lot over the years but the portions are still humongous. They load up the bowls with lots of noodles, veggies and meat. Service is friendly, fast and efficient as well. If you have friends that want to be adventurous, they have very interesting things that come with the BBH. For me, it is too adventurous LOL. The bowls are hearty, piping hot, spicy and very authentic as well. The bowls of BBH has lots of flavor already so no need to add anything extra. They also have dry noodle dishes and those are big and has lots of ingredients and toppings in them. Each bowl can literally feed two people no matter if you order a bowl of soup or dry noodles. So if you love BBH or has a friend or family member that loves BBH, this place will totally hit that spot.
Nothing reigns more supreme than my MIL's homemade bun bo hue but Bun Bo Hue A Nam is honestly one of the better bowls I've had when eating out!! My first visit with this business [years ago] left me genuinely unimpressed. My most recent visit confirmed how difficult of a foodie rater I used to be. Lmao. Contrary to it's name, BBHAN offers other items besides BBH. Here you can find beef ball rice noodle soup, pho, and nam vang noodles. Lunch: -Large Bun Bo Hue Dac Biet [special spicy beef noodle soup] x2 -Ice Tea x2 Each dish is provided its own personal plate of fresh veggies, herbs, chili, & shrimp paste. The broth is clean, beefy, packed with flavor, & doesn't contain an overly oily top. Noodles are cooked well and the beefy protein is generous. 4/5 stars!! BBHAN is a popular for obvious reasons. My visit on a weekday consisted of a full restaurant with folks standing outside waiting for an open table, I can only imagine what this place is like during the weekend.
I came on a Friday night ~7:30 and luckily there was not a wait. We were sat immediately and placed our orders within five minutes. The Bun Bo Hue had a deep, rich flavor. The broth was spicy but not overwhelmingly so. This came with sausage, tendon, pork and a side of cabbage with shrimp paste and chili if needed. Everything about this bowl was savory and refreshing. I also ordered the Hu Tieu Nam Vang with the pork broth on the side. I wish I ordered with the pork broth inside, but regardless it was still delicious. The pork broth had a very deep flavor. Everything about it was perfect. This came with squid, shrimp, pork, and an assortment of veggies on the side. There were lots of tables so even if there were a wait, I would imagine it wouldn't be too long. The service was good and the area was clean. I will definitely come back.
Still think their Bun Bo Hue is the best in the bay area! The cane sugar drink is very good too. I like that they give you cabbage instead of bean sprouts. Also, each person had their own separate dish of cabbage, mint, dry onions, bean sprouts, and jalapeño pepper. Always a wait but what is within 10 to 15 mins even 5 to 7 parties were ahead of us. Ambiance is super casual, cozy. Normal pho place ambiance.
Got the bun Bo hue Dac biet. The soup base was delicious, perfectly seasoned. The meat selection had a lot of variety, but it wasn't as tender as I hoped it to be. Service was quick. TIP: cash or debit card only
